Pierre Bernard

Pierre
is Secretary General of Elia Group, the Belgian electricity
transmission system operator (TSO), and also in charge of
European Development. He heads namely the Elia team involved
in setting up a regional electricity market for the countries
of Belgium, France, Luxemburg, Germany and The Netherlands.
He actively participated
in the drafting of important parts of the Belgian electricity
legislation and regulation as well as the different grid related
contracts. He played a key role in drafting the specific legislation
and contracts for the Belgian Power Exchange, Belpex.
Under his leadership, the legal department
of the Elia Group, was awarded in February 2007 the “2007
Belgian Legal Award for the Most Prominent Transaction”
(with the creation of Belpex). Pierre heads the lawyers of
ETSO and UCTE, the 2 main European associations of transmission
operators, soon to be merged in the new “ENTSO-E”.
Pierre is also a Trustee of the Belgian Governance Institute,
Guberna. |
Duncan Burt

Duncan heads up the Customer
Services Team within National Grid, Transmission, and is responsible
for new and existing connections to the gas and electricity
Transmission networks and also some aspects of charging. Duncan
joined National Grid in 2000, having previously worked in
the pharmaceutical sector for what is now Glaxosmithkline.
At National Grid he initially worked as a power system engineer
before moving through a number of commercial and regulatory
posts, predominantly focussed on electricity transmission,
prior to his current role. He is based in Warwick, UK. |
Max Carcas

Max is responsible for PWP’s
commercial development and sales and marketing of the Pelamis
WEC. He has many years experience in international sales and
marketing with a focus on bringing new innovative products
to market and creating new markets for existing products.
Prior to PWP he established and grew the European subsidiary
of BW Technologies Ltd, a TSE listed manufacturer of innovative
gas monitoring systems including equipment to reduce CO2 domestic
boiler emissions. He was also Managing Director of Engineering
for Science and Industry Ltd, a systems integrator for the
oil and gas industry. Max originally graduated from Edinburgh
University with an honours degree in Electrical & Electronic
Engineering. Following this he spent seven years as Sales
and Marketing Manager for City Technology plc (now part of
Honeywell) which became the world’s leading manufacturer
of miniature fuel-cell gas sensors used in safety, medical
and environmental applications. He is currently a member of
the REA’s Ocean Energy Group, the BWEA’s Marine
Steering Group and a Director of OREC in the USA. |

Helge Daebel

Based in the Zurich office,
Helge Daebel is a Sector Specialist responsible for water
technologies and marine renewables within Emerald Technology
Ventures. He is responsible for Emerald’s strategy within
these sectors and is involved from the initial phases of the
investment process up to assisting management during the investment
period. Prior to joining Emerald, Helge conducted research
at the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology
(Eawag) in the Environmental Engineering Division. During
his Master studies, he worked for several years at the German
Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute and participated
in various water projects in South America. Helge holds a
Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the Swiss Federal
Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, a Masters Degree
in Civil Engineering from the Technical University of Karlsruhe. |

Australia, and is a qualified accountant with CPA Australia.
From Oceanlinx’s London office,

Paul joined Ocean Power Technologies
Limited in October 2005 to head up their Business Development
activities to progress existing, and secure new, OPT wave
energy projects in the significant European markets. Previously,
Paul worked at the Carbon Trust, where he set-up and ran the
Marine Energy Challenge programme. Prior to this, Paul initially
worked in Rolls-Royce Transmission and Distribution and latterly
Rolls-Royce Power Ventures focusing on project development
of 5MW to 150MW power projects in the UK and Americas. Paul
graduated from Newcastle University with a Masters in Mechanical
Engineering (Europe) and has an MBA from INSEAD. |

Alan Mortimer

Alan Mortimer graduated from
Glasgow University in 1987 with an Honours degree in Aeronautical
Engineering. He then joined James Howden & Co. Ltd. in
Glasgow, working on a variety of power engineering products.
In 1991 Alan joined ScottishPower. During this period the
company has expanded to become the leading player in the UK
wind market with 18 windfarms totalling over 600MW. In his
current role as Head of Renewables Policy he has responsibility
for policy and strategic issues related to the company’s
growth ambitions. This includes developments in the emerging
marine sector. |
Trevor Raggatt

Trevor
Raggatt joined the Energy Innovation Unit in the, then, Department
for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) in January
2008. He leads on policy relating to bioenergy and marine
energy technology (including oversight of the Marine Renewables
Deployment Fund). As part of this role he was the UK Executive
Committee member for the IEA implementing agreements on Bioenergy
and Ocean Energy Systems. With the creation of the Department
of Energy and Climate Change in September that year his portfolio
changed to comprise broader energy innovation policy responsibilities
alongside his lead on marine energy.
He joined the Department of Trade and
Industry in 1990 after gaining a BSc(Hons) in Chemistry at
Royal Holloway College (University of London) and research
work in conjunction with the College and BP - initially working
on both policy and the development of ultra-pure reference
materials at the Laboratory of the Government Chemist in Teddington.
He moved to DTI headquarters in London in 1992 and, in the
course of his career, has worked on a diverse range of policy
topics including National Measurement Standards, UK civil
space policy, Rescue and Reconstruction of the Lloyds of London
insurance market, UK & International Reporting and Accounting
Standards, the UK’s major reviews of Company & Partnership
Law and, latterly, State aid (leading, amongst other things,
on aid for environmental protection). |

Marcus Royle (BSc Hons) obtained
hands-on composite experience prior to and during university
in the Oil & Gas, Architectural and Aerospace industries.
Following university he obtained a graduate position in project
engineering for the Aerospace industry and has since developed

and Marine industries. This variety of markets means that
Marcus has experience in virtually every aspect of composite
processing. A recent move to Gurit uses a combination of all
previous experience to find and grow new, long term applications
for Gurit products and services with a focus on Ocean Energy. |

Michael
is a Principal Consultant at BMT Fleet Technology. He has
18 years experience with a number of BMT Companies including
BMT Reliability Consultants, BMT Renewables and BMT Cordah
where he has provided advice to industry and government and
also has over 10 years previous experience running high technology
engineering projects.
He specialises in
energy - with a focus on renewable energy and oil & gas,
in risk assessment - particularly for projects with high technical,
safety, environmental, financial or resource risks, and in
techno-economic analysis - mainly for projects that include
marine operations.
In addition he has
a wide experience in a variety of other sectors including
the built environment, defence, marine transport, commercial
shipping, aerospace and railways. His strength is that he
has worked in a variety of industry sectors and is familiar
with a wide spectrum of projects and high technology engineering.
He is currently working on a variety
of renewable energy projects and a risk assessment of a new

Ocean Energy team for 3 years, he is actively involved in

Daniel Wood

Daniel Wood is a Marine Management
Scientist working within the Environment & Ecosystems
Division at Cefas (Centre for Environment, Fisheries &
Aquaculture Science). Originally carrying out international
business development Daniel now studies the effects of human
activities on the marine environment and is working on green
designs for wind turbines, effects of construction and seismic
exploration noise on marine life, effects of dredging on the
marine environment and currently a very large EIA project.
Daniel works closely with many aspects of the Regulatory Advice
Team within Cefas. Most recently he has been examining methods
to “De-risk” wet renewable developments. |
